Il Parlamento europeo istituisce l’Ordine europeo al merito
Per celebrare il 75° anniversario della dichiarazione Schuman, il Parlamento europeo istituisce l’Ordine europeo al merito, la prima distinzione ufficiale europea di questo genere.
In vista del 75° anniversario della dichiarazione Schuman, atto fondativo dell’unità europea, l’Ufficio di presidenza del Parlamento europeo ha deciso di istituire l’Ordine europeo al merito, la prima distinzione di questo tipo a livello europeo accordato da un’Istituzione UE.
Questa nuova onorificenza civile renderà omaggio alle persone che hanno dato un contributo significativo all’integrazione europea e ai valori europei. Tutti gli Stati membri, tranne l’Irlanda, attribuiscono distinzioni negli ordinamenti nazionali, riflettendo un impegno condiviso in tutta l’Unione a riconoscere l’eccellenza e a premiare i contributi che arricchiscono la società. Attualmente non esiste una distinzione analoga a livello dell’Unione europea. L’Ordine europeo al merito mira a colmare questa lacuna, riaffermando un’identità europea condivisa in un momento in cui le sfide globali richiedono una maggiore unità.
“L’Europa è costruita dai suoi cittadini e l’Ordine europeo al merito è per loro”, ha dichiarato la Presidente Metsola. “Questo Ordine celebra i leader coraggiosi che agiscono con convinzione e credono, come faceva Robert Schuman, che la pace, la democrazia e la dignità non siano solo ideali, ma azioni concrete. In occasione del 75° anniversario dell’ardito esordio del progetto europeo, rendiamo omaggio a coloro che continuano a coltivarlo.”
Le proposte di nomina all’Ordine possono essere presentate dal presidente del Parlamento europeo, dal presidente del Consiglio europeo, dal presidente della Commissione europea, dai capi di Stato o di governo e dai presidenti dei parlamenti nazionali dello Stato membro. Il comitato di selezione, composto dal presidente del Parlamento europeo, due vicepresidenti e quattro personalità europee eminenti, selezionerà ogni anno fino a 20 vincitori.
La prima cerimonia di conferimento è prevista al più tardi entro la fine del 2026. Con questa iniziativa il Parlamento europeo rende omaggio al perdurante spirito dell’unità europea, dai suoi primi passi nel secondo dopoguerra fino alle sfide di oggi.

European Parliament establishes a European Order of Merit
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the European Parliament establishes a European Order of Merit, the first official European distinction of this kind.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the founding act of European unity, the Bureau of the European Parliament has decided to establish the European Order of Merit, the first distinction of this kind at European level awarded by an EU Institution.
This new civil honour will pay tribute to individuals who have made a significant contribution to European integration and European values. All Member States, except Ireland, award distinctions in their national orders, reflecting a shared commitment throughout the Union to recognise excellence and reward contributions that enrich society. Currently, no such distinction exists at the level of the European Union. The European Order of Merit aims to fill this gap, reaffirming a shared European identity at a time when global challenges require greater unity.
“Europe is built by its citizens and the European Order of Merit is for them,” said President Metsola. “This Order celebrates courageous leaders who act with conviction and believe, as Robert Schuman did, that peace, democracy and dignity are not just ideals, but concrete actions. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the bold beginning of the European project, we pay tribute to those who continue to cultivate it.”
Nominations for the Order can be submitted by the President of the European Parliament, the President of the European Council, the President of the European Commission, the Heads of State or Government and the Presidents of the national parliaments of the Member State. The selection committee, composed of the President of the European Parliament, two Vice-Presidents and four eminent European figures, will select up to 20 winners each year.
The first award ceremony is scheduled for no later than the end of 2026. With this initiative, the European Parliament pays tribute to the enduring spirit of European unity, from its first steps in the post-war period to today’s challenges.
