Milan, 30 January 2026 – International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry, along with Giovanni Malagò, President of Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026, visited the Main Media Center in Milano yesterday to meet the volunteers supporting the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
The IOC President met with some of the 18,000 volunteers supporting the Games. Volunteers at the Main Media Center support a wide range of activities, from assisting journalists and broadcasters to managing and coordinating media operations.
During her visit, the IOC President spoke with them, listened to their stories, and thanked them personally, emphasizing their fundamental role: “Volunteers are the secret source of the magic of the Olympic Games,” she said, recalling her own experience as a five-time Olympian.
“You are often the first people athletes, families, and fans meet. The atmosphere you create is incredibly important, not only for those present at the venues, but also for the millions of people who follow the Games around the world.”
Looking back on the London 2012 Games, Coventry recalled how the volunteers’ enthusiasm transformed the athletes’ experience, adding: “That energy and passion stay with you. It’s what makes the Games so special.”
She concluded by inviting the volunteers to carry on this spirit, thanking them “for everything you have done and will do to make these Games unforgettable.”
Giovanni Malagò thanked the IOC President for her presence and addressed the volunteers: “For each of you, this will be a unique experience,” he said, highlighting the extraordinary nature of Olympic volunteering.
Malagò emphasized the diversity of the volunteer community, made up of people from all over Italy and abroad, of different ages, genders, and backgrounds. “The world you represent is fantastic,” he said.
“For me, it is the best example not only of Italy, but of the entire planet.”
President Kristy Coventry’s visit reaffirmed the importance of volunteers within the Olympic Movement and the central role they play in bringing the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect to Milano Cortina 2026 every day.
