At Milano Cortina 2026, the Games intertwine with the energy of the city. During these weeks, sport, culture, and community engage in continuous dialogue. Among the celebrations lighting up Milano, the Chinese New Year brings symbols, traditions, and stories that naturally resonate with the Olympic spirit.
Milan, 15 February 2026 – The Lunar New Year, celebrated in 2026, today, on 17 February and marking the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse, fills Milano with colors and festivity. In Via Paolo Sarpi, the heart of the city’s historic Chinese community, which has been present for over a century, the streets are illuminated with red lanterns and traditional decorations, while restaurants and shops offer typical Spring Festival dishes. This year, due to the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, the traditional Dragon Parade has been rescheduled to 1 March. Starting at 2:00 p.m., Piazza Sempione and the Arco della Pace will host the spectacular Lion and Dragon dances, martial arts performances, traditional costumes, and thousands of spectators, in an event offered to the city by Chinese associations with the support of the Municipality of Milan.
Within this festive and intercultural atmosphere, a special wish arrived from Olivia, a young Chinese student passionate about winter sports and the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Writing from Beijing’s Haidian district, Olivia celebrated the Lunar New Year by drawing Tina and Milo on the character “福” (Fu), a symbol of happiness and prosperity, beautifully merging Spring Festival tradition with her affection for our mascots. A simple yet meaningful gesture, inspired by her enthusiasm when following the Games from the other side of the world. Her message finds a natural echo in Milano with the presence of the Olympic House of China.
The strong bond between China and Milano Cortina 2026 is also reflected in the presence of the National Olympic Committee of China, which has established the House of China at Villa Clerici from 4 to 22 February. More than a hospitality space, the House of China serves as a cultural salon dedicated to cultural exchange and dialogue. It represents the beating heart of China’s cultural initiatives during the Olympic Games, featuring exhibitions on Chinese sporting traditions, showcases of modern sport achievements, immersive activities and interactive experiences highlighting the deep cultural ties between China and Italy. Access to the House of China is available by reservation.
China’s presence at Milano Cortina 2026 extends beyond cultural celebrations to significant human and sporting contributions. A total of 1,500 Chinese volunteers are part of the Team26 Programme, forming one of the largest and most active communities within the volunteer initiative. With 286 members, including 126 athletes and 160 staff, competing in seven sports, 15 disciplines, and 91 events, this marks China’s largest Winter Olympics participation abroad. In recent days, China has won four medals, two silver and two bronze, further contributing to the dynamic medal table for this edition of the Olympic Games.
